Certificate Dashboard - Simplifying Certificate Management

Certificate Dashboard - Simplifying Certificate Management

Browser vendors are tightening certificate lifetimes — dropping from 398 days to as little as 47 days by 2029. Certificate Dashboard helps you stay ahead with automated tracking, renewal, and future cloud PKI integration for secure and effortless device certificate management.

The web security landscape is undergoing a significant shift. Major browsers and certificate authorities have agreed to reduce the maximum lifetime of TLS/HTTPS certificates over the next few years. Starting in 2026, the maximum certificate lifetime will drop from 398 days to 200 days, and eventually to just 47 days by 2029. This initiative, led by the CA/Browser Forum, is designed to strengthen security across the internet by limiting the impact of compromised certificates and encouraging better automation practices.

Shorter certificate lifetimes mean that even if a private key is exposed or misused, the window of opportunity for an attacker is dramatically reduced. In fast-moving cloud-native environments, this change aligns well with existing automation and DevOps practices. However, for device-centric and industrial systems, the implications are more complex.

In many industrial, embedded, and operational technology (OT) environments, certificates are still managed manually. Devices may be deployed in remote locations, operate continuously with limited maintenance windows, or be maintained by teams that already juggle multiple operational responsibilities. In these contexts, certificates are often treated as a “set it and forget it” configuration item, something that works quietly in the background until it suddenly doesn’t.

As certificate lifetimes shrink, that approach becomes increasingly risky.

The Challenge for Device and Industrial Environments

Shorter-lived certificates introduce several practical challenges for organizations managing fleets of devices, PLCs, or industrial systems:

  • More frequent renewals: What used to be a once-a-year task will soon need to happen multiple times per year or even monthly.

  • Tighter operational windows: Missed renewals can quickly lead to expired certificates, broken communication, and unexpected downtime.

  • Increased operational overhead: Manually tracking expiration dates across dozens or thousands of devices does not scale.

  • Higher risk of human error: Spreadsheets, calendar reminders, and ad hoc processes are fragile under increasing renewal frequency.

For teams responsible for uptime, reliability, and security, these challenges can quickly turn certificate management into a source of stress rather than a background task. This is exactly the problem Certificate Dashboard is designed to solve.

How Certificate Dashboard Helps

At MicroDoc, we built Certificate Dashboard with these upcoming changes in mind. We recognized early on that shorter certificate lifetimes would require a fundamental shift in how certificates are managed—especially in environments where full automation has traditionally been difficult to implement.

Certificate Dashboard goes beyond simply displaying certificate metadata. It provides teams with the visibility and control they need to stay ahead of expirations and reduce operational risk.

With built-in expiration tracking, teams can immediately see which certificates are approaching their expiration date and prioritize renewals accordingly. Instead of reacting to failures, you can plan renewals proactively and align them with maintenance windows or operational schedules.

A centralized view replaces scattered spreadsheets, manual SSH checks, and tribal knowledge. Operations, security, and engineering teams all work from the same source of truth, gaining full visibility into certificates across devices and systems. This shared visibility helps reduce miscommunication and ensures accountability when renewals are due.

Today, Certificate Dashboard supports generating self-signed certificates and automatically renewing them. This capability already removes a significant amount of manual effort from day-to-day operations. Automated renewal ensures consistency, reduces configuration errors, and helps teams maintain secure communication channels without constant manual intervention.

Reducing Risk While Improving Operational Efficiency

One of the most overlooked benefits of certificate automation is not just security, it’s operational stability. Expired certificates are a common cause of unexpected outages, failed connections, and difficult-to-diagnose issues. When certificates are managed centrally and renewed automatically, teams spend less time firefighting and more time focusing on system reliability and improvement.

As renewal frequency increases, this becomes even more critical. What might have been manageable with annual certificates quickly becomes unmanageable when certificates expire every few weeks. Certificate Dashboard helps bridge that gap by making certificate management predictable, repeatable, and resilient.

Ready for What’s Next

Looking ahead, Certificate Dashboard is being designed with future expansion in mind. We’re preparing for cloud PKI integration with private certificate authorities, enabling automatic issuance and renewal of certificates from trusted internal CAs. This will allow devices to remain continuously secure without manual provisioning or intervention.

This evolution lays the groundwork for fully automated certificate lifecycles—from initial provisioning to regular rotation and eventual replacement. As environments grow more distributed and software-driven, this level of automation becomes essential rather than optional.

Shorter-lived certificates are a clear signal of where the industry is heading. Automation, visibility, and lifecycle management are no longer “nice-to-have” features, they are requirements for maintaining secure and reliable systems at scale.

Turning Change into an Opportunity

While shorter certificate lifetimes may initially feel like added complexity, they also present an opportunity. Organizations that embrace automation and modern certificate management practices can reduce risk, improve uptime, and simplify operations at the same time.

Certificate Dashboard is built to help teams navigate this transition with confidence. By removing manual effort, increasing visibility, and preparing for future PKI integration, it enables organizations to adapt to the evolving security landscape without disrupting their operations.

As certificate lifetimes continue to shrink, the right tools can turn a looming challenge into a catalyst for modernization—and a stronger security foundation for the years ahead.
